Okay, I just got an entry on my contest and it's actually pretty cool -- so I'm a bit happier now. I still wouldn't recommend 99designs just because it feels like you drop the money into an abyss and pray.

Almost forgot, I'm also adding the author HTTP header (x-amz-meta-a) which will be set to the authenticated UID.

Rather than having the copy/delete for moving the exact S3 key in the rename() method, I only put it in load(). The code in the former was a "first-pass" attempt, but any moderator actually doing this will have to load the page afterwards anyway. This splits the work and the part that may be attempted more than once is now in the proper place, e.g. load().

Running in circles has exhausted me. I nearly tried the Zend OpenID library, but then stayed away for fear of too much interdependence. Everyone appears to be using the JanRain library which makes me wonder why it feels so rough and bloated. My decision is to base my own modifications from this so-called "Simple OpenID PHP Class":

http://www.phpclasses.org/browse/package/3290.html

Admittedly it's rough, but I only had to remove the example's use of PATH_INFO (non-existent on my machine) in order for it to work with E_NOTICE and E_STRICT enabled. All that in a somewhat-spaghetti 10k script... it's a start.

SVG is generally slower because it's tracking all those objects, vectors, etc. Canvas speed is dependent on how much script you're trying to run, not how much you've drawn, since it's only a buffer of the latest pixels drawn. Using both in a web page will only affect the performance of either as it pertains to using machine's CPU and scripting both simultaneously.
